I had the same problem and solved it by moving /etc/samba/smb.conf.default to /etc/samba/smb.conf and re-adding my old config bit by bit. Downgrading samba and smbclient on the server reverted successfully to the previous behaviour, I'll guess I'll wait for a fix or more info from the samba team.
